Hi to you.....

Hi to you...

Welcome to the blog of Apple Prairie Farm. I want to show you around our farm, maybe inspire you to try to raise a few animals or even put some seeds in a raised bed in order to have some homegrown goodness! The food we grow on our farm is flavorful and as good as it gets! When our family sits down to enjoy a meal that we raised on our farm, we look at each other and know that we have to keep doing what we are doing. Can't find this much flavor in the grocery store!

Every summer we sharpen up our knives and roll out the plucker in order to put the chickens in the freezer. (If you can't handle pictures of dead chickens then I suggest you don't continue to read this blog post.) The pictures that are posted aren't too graphic i...

On our farm we have decided that raising meat chickens to sell locally is a great way to get some cash flow and get our family to work together. One of our boys does a lot of the care for the birds in order to earn a commission on the sale of the birds. In other words...

We got our first 6 ducks last year! They were the highlight of our summer! Oh, except for having 2 bottle lambs in the house running around with their diapered bums. Now that was cute!

I had heard that ducks were hard to manage because they are so ridiculously messy! So...

There are great ways to manage chickens and here are some pointers that our farm does in order to keep our birds occupied, to benefit our yard and to keep away predators. If you follow these pointers your chickens will really benefit long term. The first pointer is......

Some people think Guinea Hens are loud and obnoxious. That is true. I wouldn't recommend getting Guinea Hens if you have close neighbors. They can make a horrible racket! I feel that the obnoxious sound is minor compared to the benefit they give to a homestead. Th...

Because we have a farm that is similar to the old time farm of yester-year, we just had to raise a few heritage turkey's. You know the kind of farm that was common back in the day, before people were so concerned about acquiring cheap food, where they don't care how it...

This last summer, we decided that it just wasn't fair for people in our community to not have the chance to buy homegrown, out on the pasture chicken. Why should their only option be flavorless chicken from the store? We already had plenty of experience raising chicken...

Seriously, can you find a more perfect food than Farm fresh eggs? I think not. Every morning, I have my favorite breakfast. Eggs!!! Eggs cooked perfectly. Eggs cooked just right. Not just any ol eggs from the store, but from the lovely hens we have on our farm! Totally...

When you have new chicks coming from the post office or from the incubator you need to be prepared. Chicks need 90 degree temps to stay alive. They can't get chilled. If you don't have a heat lamp, go to the hardware store and get one or maybe more depending on how man...

I believe that one of the first steps for us on our homesteading journey was building our chicken coop. Actually maybe the first step was being at a friend's house and she cooked me a fresh egg. I could not believe it was an egg! Is this an egg? How can this be an egg...
